I go to Heidelberg to work on a project with Franzi and Anna, a graduate student from Warsaw.

My plane in Edinburgh |
I get a nice view over Scotland |
In Heidelberg my hotel |
Franzi takes me around Heidelberg |
We see the original University |
And the Cathedral |
And the River Neckar which winds through Heidelberg |
Franzi and her husband Christoph take me for Schnitzel |
It happens to be the night for Heidelberg's fireworks show! |
On Sunday we take the train |
To Speyer |
Which happens to be having a pretzel festival |
There are people in stilts |
And a footrace |
The Speyer Cathedral |
Inside the cathedral |
We cross a bridge |
And the first place house in the decorating contest |
On the way to SeaLife (notice the sidewalk fish!) |
There we see lots of fish |
A moray eel |
Franzi faces the moray |
Rays |
Bright reef fish |
A sea horse |
An aurelia (reminder of the jelly cruise!) |
There are tunnels through giant tanks |
Giving great views of big fish schools |
A poison dart frog is very colourfull |
And a very pretty lion fish |
Next we go to the Technology Museum |
Where they have the bullet car |
The fastest motorcycle |
A MIG |
A U-boat which you can climb inside |
A Boeing 747 that you can go inside too |
The 747's platform is see-through! |
Here I am on the 747's wing |
Franzi on the wing |
This plane carried the President of East Germany |
And... ...his car! |
Some of the planes are very tilted |
We took the slide down from this plane |
In Heidelberg's Bismarkplatz we use the "Spagetti Statue" as a meeting place |
Bus 31 takes me to the University |
I go to Franzi's building |
I have room in an office |
But spend most time in Franzi's office with her and Anna |
We eat lunch in the cafeteria |
There are pictures in case you can't read German |
We watch a practice talk by Mariya, who has an interview the next day |
I go to dinner with Mariya, Franzi, Anna from Warsaw, and Anna from Franzi's Department |
The next night dinner celebrates Mariya's successful interview |
I eat the famous Flammkuchen of Heidelberg |
In the seminar/coffee room they work on PhD hats |
A finished hat that is given to new PhD graduates |
I give a seminar to the graduate school |
Anna, Franzi, and I go the supermarket |
And back to Franzi's flat to have dinner |
We meet Fussel Franzi's cat |
Fussel likes to watch trains go by |
We visit Heidelberg castle |
To get there you take the new funicula |
A slanted train that is pulled up the hill |
Then the old funicula |
At the top a view of Heidelberg |
Halfway back down we enter the castle |
Inside Heidelberg Castle |
Looking out over Heidelberg |
To get home I take the high speed train |
To the airport |
And fly back to Scotland in the sunset |
